Just the same as any other living thing, grass needs decent conditions for healthy and vigorous growing. Unluckily for the majority of us driven to own a superb patch of grass to look at, and stroll or sit on, this will invariably mean a quantity of hard labor. The earth we are going to put the grass on needs to be devoid of rocks, other solid stuff as well as weeds. It is a good idea to incorporate organic material in the sod as we dig it {over} to ensure that we have taken out all troublesome items as well as the weeds. While we are sifting through the earth to get out all those weeds, we can also be looking for grubs and other bugs etc that might just produce a problem in the future. Having produced that fine tilth you have to make absolutely sure that the lawn patch is nice and flat so that the mower ought to have a velvety drive over it and there will be no scalping of humps and bumps or longer areas of grass in dips.

When my family and i moved into our first new place I used the weight of my two daughters to assist. I dug over and cleaned up the soil first. Then I made use of a big plank that the builders had made a makeshift bench from. I turned it upside down and fastened the tow rope from my car to the legs. I sat my girls on the levelling “machine” and pulled them around. This killed two birds with one stone. It kept my girls amused and well behaved as I flattened the soil. Whenever I saw low bits or bumps I used a rake to shift some soil to get rid of them. The upshot was a nigh perfect flat surface and two happy girls.

There is a grass care decision to be made as soon as we have got our nice level spot. Should we lay turf or should we sow seed? There are a few things to analyze here. Can we afford great quality turf? It must be the best available or all that hard work of soil preparation can be wasted as inferior quality turf can have weeds already in it or not have been harvested correctly so that it is thin and not have a good root system. If you like the idea of sowing seed, what time of year is it? The best time of year to sow is when fall is coming on because with the cooler, wetter weather there will be less requirement to water the seedlings and there ought to be no need for us to trample our newly sown grass down. Once again one must be looking for the better quality seed that will be right for the type of climate we live in.

When the turf is laid or the seed sown we should make sure that the ground does not dry out or that folks trample the area before our marvellous new lawn is fully established. Should one need to walk across the new grass, try using a board or other technique to spread the weight so that you will not damage the new grass under foot. Do not forget to take the plank or whatever up again as soon as you have finished for the day so that the grass will be able to recover more quickly. Make sure that the herbage is able to withstand a mower before giving it that first cut. Speaking of that first cut, do not go too near to the earth. Good grass care says that you give it a few cuts to make sure the grass is healthy before trying for that marvellous “bowling green” look.

Grass care must in fact be originated with the preparation of a brand new lawn.
