Strawberries can be grown in most parts of the country right at home in the garden.\u00a0 Your local nursery will carry varieties that should work for your area.\u00a0 Almost everywhere in the country they’ll be planted and treated as evergreens in the garden, but in some of the warmer parts of the country like parts of Texas they are just treated as annuals and replanted every year.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The first step of course is to pick the sort of strawberries that you want to grow.\u00a0 They are generally broken down into three different sorts.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The most typically grown are the June bearing varieties.\u00a0 While they do not truly all bear in June, particularly in the different parts of the country, these often have a peak period of production that only last 2 – 3 weeks.\u00a0 Nonetheless these tend to be the largest and tastiest of the varieties, explaining their recognition.\u00a0<\/p>\n
There are also the ever bearing varieties.\u00a0 Rather littler, these will have productive burst 2 to 3 times a season, and so stretch out harvest season more than the June bearing.\u00a0 These also don’t spread as much as the June bearers.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Finally are the day neutral types.\u00a0 These are the most consistent bearers of the bunch, but tend to have smaller fruits than the other two.\u00a0 Once more, they do not send out as many runners as the June bearers.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Since ever bearing and day neutral varieties don’t send out a lot of runners, they are the favorites to be used when planting strawberries in containers.\u00a0 This is a fave way to grow strawberries, and makes it possible for many that do not have the room for a strawberry bed.\u00a0 Either a hanging planter or a self watering container on the terrace is two popular boxes.\u00a0<\/p>\n
