They allow you a greater control of diseases, moisture, pests and weeds, and they facilitate the growth of more produce in the same amount of space.

Any plants that love well-drained soil can benefit from being grown in raised beds. And you don’t have to limit yourself to vegetables. You can also grow herbs, fruits and flowers.

In raised bed gardening, the soil is usually put into frames that are about three or four feet wide and any length. The soil is added and fed into a pre-made box made of wood.

In a raised bed garden, plants are much closer to each other than traditionally allowed in regular gardens. This allows the plants to conserve moisture and also help block the sun from allowing weeds to germinate and grow.

The raised beds growing season is extended, since you can plant earlier than regular gardens, and harvest later. This way you will have more produce.

If you have soil problems in your garden, you can use raised beds and just bypass your own soil completely. If you start with completely fresh soil, it doesn’t matter what type of soil you had in your garden to begin with.

Another great benefit of raised bed gardening is the fact that the gardener doesn’t walk on the soil in which the plants are growing. This helps prevent the soil from being packed down, so the roots can grow through the soil more readily.

It’s not necessary for you to till the soil under the box unless you want to. This is great for people that don’t know how to use a tiller.

You don’t have to water as much. The soil can retain moisture more easily, so you only need to water in small amounts and not too often. This will allow you to save money and to conserve water.

Frames can be built on top of plywood bases, and then raised to any height. It can make gardening possible for handicapped and older people. It could be the only way to garden for someone in a wheel chair.

Diseases and pests are easier to control in raised beds. Fresh soil is unlikely contaminated with diseases. If the plants develop any infection, you can simply remove and replace the soil.

Since the area is confined, it is easier to deal with pests. Raised bed gardening makes it easier to detect problems, and if a problem is indeed detected, it can be promptly fixed before it spreads.

About the author: Martha Robertson provides expert advice for all of your home improvement challenges.
