From a societal point of view, gardening will contribute to a green and healthy environment.  On a household level, a kempt garden will add to both aesthetic and nominal value of your property. If you are going to grow your own fruits and vegetables in your backyard, you will be contributing to your family\u2019s overall health as well.<\/p>\n<p> Working in your garden is a good and safe way to burn calories. In fact, you can burn as many calories in forty-five minutes of gardening as you would in a thirty-minute aerobic exercise.  Gardening is an effective stress-reliever too.  A manicured garden will serve as a personal oasis where you can recollect, pause for meditation, or just get in touch with nature. Gardening lets us learn a few important life lessons and skills as well. For one, since we can\u2019t rush nature, it teaches us to be more patient. Also, without realizing it, we become more creative and definitely more nurturing as well.<\/p>\n<p>There are several factors to consider when choosing which plants to work with.  The availability of sunlight is one of them. Tomatoes and salad greens for instance need ample sunlight to thrive.  Another consideration would be the amount of space you have in your property. If your gardening space is limited, look for &#8220;dwarf&#8221; varieties, or plants that grow upright instead of sideways.<\/p>\n<p>Also, you have to consider your level of experience and the amount of time and effort you can commit to the hobby. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iris-plants.com\/siberian-iris-plants\">Iris plant<\/a>\u00a0for instance are great for beginners because they are easy to grow and don\u2019t require a lot to maintain. Keep in mind that iris plants need half a day&#8217;s worth of daylight to thrive.  To grow, the soil where you are going to plant your irises should allow for adequate draining, have a pH of around 6.8 &#8211; 7, and be treated with low-nitrogen fertilizer twice yearly. Irises don\u2019t like moisture, so avoid mulching too.  Remove wilted leaves and make it a habit to inspect if there are weeds growing around the iris, and if there are, remove them as well.
