Mr. Wilson was a successful businessman and first post-Reconstruction mayor. He was also the mayor who helped bring the first public water system to the city. We can call him the father of plumbing in Houston TX.

The waterworks company was organized on April 15, 1879. For 131 years we have been using the water system in Houston But, not everyone knows how old the plumbing system really is.

Indian called the (Hohokam) in Arizona were the first in the US to build canals so water gets to their crops. This happened about 350 B.C. They started making these water networks with wooden tools and stones because there wasn’t any pipes.

The thing that was amazing about them was they made their plumbing system go for many miles and it would connect to other tribes and they all shared it. Sadly in 1450 the Hohokam Indians were never seen again. There Great plumbing system stayed behind when they became instanced and that made our inventers make the new plumbing system.

When the new Americans found hollowed pipes they liked it. Water just flowed out easily. They had a ton of trees that they could use as pipes. There was only one problem; the wood would get rotten underground. To fix it they sealed the joints with tar and sometimes lead.

With change and time they made corrections to the system. Then they started calling it plumbing since it involved pipes going into and from the toilet bath house and drains.

In the 1800’s Peoples water closet was located outside the home. People hated the smell of human waste. With that said indoor plumbing was made. Hotels in the US started using bathrooms that were located inside and it was stink free and no one would see.

Then the private bathroom became a bathroom after showers and bathtubs were introduced. Those wooden pipes got replaced by led pipes until the 70s when people found out the lead is dangerous to our health, now as you see they use plastic, ceramic, and fiberglass pipes. For the wealthy people they had at least one in the house. Even in this day and age we enjoy what plumbing gives us, and to think the first pipes were wooden. Good that the Lead and wooden pipes didn’t happen in our life time.

Now you see how old the plumbing in Huston and America is. The plumbing system became more and more sophisticated and now it is a very complicated system which requires regular maintenance just like every other modern system.

You have a lot of things you can fix on your own in your house like a clogged pipe or a small leak.
