Once you have put up a real Christmas tree you might never want to use an artificial tree again. Many people have switched from using real Christmas trees to artificial ones in recent years but that does not mean there still is not a place for fresh trees these days. Here are some guidelines to get you started:

Preparing for your cut Christmas tree: It is important to be smart when picking the size of a cut tree by measuring the area you are going to use. You will want to protect the flooring in the area where you are going to set up your fresh cut pine because there may be a lot of people traffic, liquid spills or heavy things being dragged around. A fresh Christmas tree is fairly heavy so you might want to think about a way to fasten it to a banister or wall just to be safe. You will need an electrical outlet close by for lights.

Watering your tree: To assist with water absorption, you can use a handsaw or chainsaw to cut an inch or so off the trunk before setting it in the stand. If you do not want to be concerned about forgetting to add water, you should want to look into some of the many automatic Christmas tree watering systems. The amount of water you will need to give your Christmas tree will be determined by how big it is and the humidity in the room. Hot and dry homes will probably mean more frequent watering trips, while colder homes may require a little less watering sessions.

Other issues to consider: Most electric Christmas decorations are perfectly safe, but LED Christmas decorations burn cooler than incandescent lights and use less electricity. Of course, you need to be safe with electric lights by always turning them out when you leave your house and by not maxing out all the outlets you have. Decorating a fresh cut tree is no different than with a fake one, but safety should always be a main concern. Again, be certain your heavy tree cannot fall or be knocked over accidentally.

Even if you’ve been using an artificial tree for years you owe it to your family to try a freshly cut pine at least once. While they can be more challenging than the fake ones, fresh Christmas trees can bring a unique feeling to the Christmas season. A fresh pine tree can truly make a huge difference during your holiday season.

Having family over for the Christmas season and need some home improvement help?
