It’s clear that plants need sunlight, or at least artificial light to grow, but you may not realize that they also need darkness sometimes almost as much as they need light.

You can’t function without your sleep at night in order to wake up rejuvenated in the morning and ready to meet a new day, and plants are not so different in their need for a little downtime. Many plants can actually maintain growth even when exposed to unrelenting light 24 hours a day, but intermittent periods of darkness are also needed if those plants are going to be allowed to thrive. Some plants thrive with long “nights,” that is, periods of darkness, and others perform well when they are given longer periods of light and short periods of dark.

Various types of grow lights have certain effects on hydroponic gardens, ranging from those that can produce rapid, healthy growth to others that are virtually useless for helping plants to grow. Number 1 among the bulbs that produce little useful plant-aiding light are incandescent bulbs, which are also inefficient energy burners, as well. Growers will usually accrue higher than average electrical bills if they use incandescent bulbs, because those fixtures waste a great deal of power by converting it to heat rather than light.

You may be risking scorching your plants if you are equipped with incandescent bulbs and place them any closer to your crop than a couple of feet away. You’ll be replacing incandescent bulbs much more frequently than you would bulbs of almost any other variety, because incandescent lights only last about 750 hours. Heat emitted by grow lights can be an issue for the grower and will likely cost extra dollars in equipment expenditures in that you will have to have your growing space equipped with heat reduction gear.

Another budget buster you’re likely to hit head-on is paying for the juice that you use to blow the heat out of your garden, because heat reduction equipment consumes electricity, as well. With fluorescent grow lights, you can raise most plants no matter how cramped your grow room design may be vertically, because fluorescent lighting can be 4 inches from your plants and won’t damage them. Cool to the touch and allowing you to be tight-fisted with electricity, fluorescent grow lights last dozens of times longer than incandescent lights, throw off little to no heat, and are flexible enough to use in all configurations of grow rooms.

The bottom line is you’ll save some dollars and most certainly get enhanced results if you switch from incandescent lights to fluorescent ones.

If you raise plants indoors, you may have experimented with different kinds of indoor grow lights, and you likely found some are quite different from others.
