Maintaining or replacing damaged gutters is essential to protect your home from the elements. The gutters and downspouts are there to protect your home during inclement weather against moisture damage. With leaky or clogged gutters water can overflow and begin to build up in the soil around the foundation of your home. Saturation of the soil around your foundation can lead to settling of the foundation walls and possibly the saturated soil will increasingly press in on the walls creating bulges or cracks that allow water into your foundation or basement.

Although cleaning your gutters is of enormous importance because it can save you from humongous repair costs and major structural damage to your home, it isn’t something that needs doing every day. It takes a good amount of time for debris to build up in your gutters so gutter cleaning is something that generally only needs to be done a few times a year.

Follow these steps to maintain the gutters on your home:

1. Clean out the leaves, sticks, seeds and other debris from within your gutters as they begin to accumulate. Scoop the debris out as thoroughly as possible using a small trowel and a gloved hand. Avoid spraying out heavy debris with a hose because you may clog the downspout trying to flush things away.

2. Remove any pasty goo that has gathered in your gutters. This is made up of the broken down debris, bark, leaf bits and granules from your asphalt roofing shingles as the water and dirt mix together during storms and rainfall.

3. After removing the sediment and debris from your gutters, use your hose to wash away the remaining residue that is left. Follow through with a flush of the downspouts with your hose on full. You can also send the garden hose into the drain opening to flush it out.

4. Once clear, check your gutters for any pooling of water that would indicate low spots. Your gutters should slop approximately 1 vertical inch for every 15 to 20 feet horizontally. This allows them to drain properly toward the downspout. If you find areas of pooling, adjust your gutters accordingly

Repairing your Gutters

You don’t necessarily need to buy gutter replacements when all that’s wrong is something you can tackle on your own. If you’re handy with tools and capable on a ladder then possibly you might only need to reattach and reinforce your existing hangers or install new hangers in their place.

If straps or nails are what’s holding your gutter on then you may want to fore-go trying to repair the existing hangers. You will need to pry away roofing materials to get at them. A better solution is to simply reinforce the gutters with hangers that use self-tapping screws

Be Mindful of Leaks

If you find leaks at the joints and seams of your gutters then pick up some silicone sealant and plug the leaks up. If you have steel gutters and are finding large holes rusted through them it is really best to just replace the gutters rather than using temporary stopgaps like patching kits.

Sometimes no matter the maintenance and care you still need gutter replacement Richmond Virginia. If your gutters and downspouts Richmond Virginia are starting to look like crumbling parapets on a castle then it may be time to call in the professionals.

Gutter maintenance is a must.
