Adding a conservatory to your property is a great way of being able to take advantage of the sunshine throughout the year.

If you decide to have a conservatory added to your property then you will have to face the tough decision of where to put the conservatory on your property. We recommend that you start by reading the guide below and then once you have a few ideas, arrange for a local conservatory designer to come and give you some advice as well.

The least popular option for where to add your new conservatory to your house is on the front of the property. This is because it is difficult to get planning permission for it, and it also leaves the front of your property open for passers by to see in. If you wanted to add the conservatory to the side of the property, this is a suitable option, obviously assuming that you have enough space at the side of the house, or do not live in a row of houses. The most popular, and best option, for most is to have the conservatory on the rear of the house. This then dictates which direction your conservatory will face. The direction the conservatory faces can have a serious effect and is something you should look into before ordering a conservatory.

North Facing – Unfortunately this is by far the worst option for planning a conservatory. You will need to made sure it is well build, well insulated and has sufficient heating in it as it will not receive much direct sunlight at any time of the day or year. Even taking the above advice into account, the chances are the room will not be warm enough to use during the winter months or at night during the summer.

South Facing – As expected, this provides the opposite of a north facing conservatory. Throughout the year, this conservatory will receive full sunshine every day! You will have to think about how to cool the room during the peaks of summer when it is in the sunshine all day. When having the conservatory designed you will want to ensure that you have sufficient roof vents and enough opening windows, even then, considor adding blinds to the roof and possibly the sides.

East Facing – Perfect for the early risers, this facing will get sunlight during the morning and lose the sunlight in the afternoon.

West Facing – Rather than getting the sun in the morning like east facing rooms, this will get the sun during the afternoon.

Here in the UK we do not have a great amount of sun all year round, however when we do, we like to make the most of it.
