Ten Natural Chicken Medicines
First off, you should bring your chicks to the Vet if you see any signs of disease as there are some problems you’ll simply need a vaccination for. However if you know what to look for and how to identify problems, this document covers some under-the-table techniques to helping your chickens out.
Caring For Chicks: Baby chicks will often have a wet underbelly and then that starts to collect gunk and dirt. The best way to counter this is to use baby shampoo and wash the chick.
Leg Mites and Scale Problems: I found that using Bag Balm works like a charm. Take some Bag Balm and rub it on your chickens legs. If that doesn’t work then I use Pam cooking spray.
Cuts or Scrapes. Betadine Solutions works best for cleaning up wounds from either a dominant hen or a predator. Camphoqphenique is a topical antispectic that will also work. Another thing that works well for wounds is Ball pickling Lime. It dries up quick and will deter flies and infection. If they have a problem with infections you can add Colloidal Silver to the water. Other than that, you’ll most likely need neosporin as a treat-all.
Cannibalism: The best way to stop cannibalism is preventing it. A great way to do this is to give the chickens dry cat food. The dry cat food has a a lot of protein in it which will reduce pecking in the chicken flock. The protein will also help the chickens to grow back their feathers if they have been being pecked for a long time.
Worms. Cayenne Pepper is a natural de-wormer that will aid in your chickens immune systems fighting off parasites. Works well against the bug blackhead.
Problems With Botulism: Botulism is a very common health problem amongst chickens it is also very easy to deal with. Just give them some Epsom salt. I dont have any problems with botulism because I add a little bit of vinegar in their water. This doesnt just counter botulism but helps their digestion especially with calcium.
Red Cell: Red cell is a solution given to horses and cows to fortify their blood but it can help your chickens also. Though you should only ever use very small amounts. But if your chicken is injured then red cell can help give it that little push to greatly accelerate its healing rate.
