Taking A Close Look As RainChains Today

In the past, Japanese gardens often sported RainChains, as a way to make beautiful, sparkling sounds for the ear. They also served to distribute water away from a roof and into an acceptable area or container. Used at temples as well as homes, these simple, decorative devices added a special feature that was both pleasing to look at and listen to.

Sometimes it was not just the chain look that was desired, but an added attraction of shapes of flowers, small animals like fish or birds, and large bells were added to the chain. Small bowls or cups would be dispersed along the chain, with water overflowing from one into the other.

The water would end up in a container of choice, perhaps a large copper bowl, gathering it together on the ground and flowing gently over the sides and onto the ground. Larger containers could be used to keep the water until it could be used elsewhere.

The people of Japan will try to use copper pure and heavy because it is very nice very pretty, does the job and last for a very long time. Many people are not eager to use copper today because of the high cost and the risk of someone trying to steal the material for monetary gain.

Copper is timeless, varying its patina over time, which makes its natural beauty and use elegant and durable. The gentle tinkling of water cascading down these chains is relaxing as well as useful. Determining the number of chains to be used along a length of guttering is important to avoid overload.

Saving rain water for use in gardens near the container is part of going ‘green’ today. Some contraptions are arranged that will catch much of the rain from these RainChains. Barrels connected together with overflow tubing can do that job easily. Beauty and functionality can go hand in hand.
