Quit Killing Your Filter: How To Know If You Need A Leaf Canister For Your Above Ground Pool Vacuum
Above ground pool vacuums often vary in function and design. Any decent cleaner will pick up not only small pieces, such as sand, but will also pick up larger things, like twigs. One way to improve the effectiveness of your above ground pool vacuum while ensuring your pool’s filter and pump have a healthy lifespan is to use an item called a leaf canister.
What Does A Leaf Canister Do?
Leaf canisters connect to the vacuum hose between the vacuum and the pump. They are also occasionally referred to as leaf traps, leaf catchers, or leaf filters. They perform the simple yet very important task of preventing bigger particles, such as leaves and twigs, from arriving at your pool’s filter after they are sucked up by your pool’s vacuum. Big particles, such as sticks and leaves, will seriously reduce the ability of your filter, and will deplete the life of your pump.
Is A Leaf Catcher Necessary For My Above Ground Pool Vacuum?
Though a leaf filter is not required for the use of a vacuum in your above ground pool, it is highly recommended. Using one will prevent strain and wear on your pool’s filter and pump, helping them to last longer and clean more efficiently. You will find that the small price of is well worth it when you notice that your filter lasts longer, not to mention that you probably won’t need to repair your pump any time soon.
Do I Need A Certain Kind For My Vacuum?
Any one will do. Several different companies manufacture them. Just about all of them are good quality. However, do not confuse a pool vacuum leaf canister with a different item called a leaf catcher that attaches to your pool’s surface skimmer. Fortunately, they look different, so it is not difficult to tell them apart.
Which One Should I Get?
The most common leaf filter for above ground pool vacuums is the BLK Canister Standard, made by Hayward, the company that produces the famous above ground pool vacuum, the AquaBug.
Other popular models include:
Large Capacity Leaf Canister – Also made by Hayward, this is similar to the BLK Canister Standard, only it is a bit larger. This enables it to hold more debris and leaves, and also enables you to empty it less often.
Zodiac G3 Leaf Canister – The Zodiac model is like the Hayward models, but it uses a patented T-Trap design to catch leaves and debris.
Leaf Canister CLC030 – While not quite as popular as the Hayward or the Zodiac models, this is still a quality item.

Some Words About Fire Pits And Fire Bowls
Fire bowls are stunning adornments that can improve the look of your backyard. They are small circular bowls that you can use to contain a fire. They’re made from an non-reactive material like stainless steel or copper, and as long as you have a cover they won’t rust. The two main reasons to get one are the beauty they provide and the cozy warmth they generate.
They are available in a number of different models and range of cost. If you need to decide which fire bowl to buy, you should look at some photos to see which is the most aesthetically pleasing. Some of them are very sturdy, like the popular Landmann Big Sky fire bowl series. Others are more like fire pit tables, like the Uniflame Slate and Marble Bowl. The shape of the Uniflame is square instead of circular.
Fire bowls are often a foot or two off the ground. The reason is they are meant to be used while sitting, and you want to keep your legs nice and warm. With some models, they will come shipped with a wire mesh screen to put on top of the bowl. This will prevent ashes from flying up. That’s only a possibility if you use a wood-fueled fire bowl.
Another fuel for use is RealFlame gel fuel, which is a clean ethanol-based fuel that snaps just like a real flame. Some people prefer the beautiful flame produced by the gel over that produced by a real wood fire. One buyer by the name of Morris Hedbrich thought the flame was a nice touch.
Some of the cheapest fire bowls can be purchased for under a hundred dollars. Many of these are still high quality, although others have had some negative reviews. The popular Landmann series of fire bowls retails for between one and two hundred dollars. If you go into into a price range above that, you can get the best-selling Hampton fire bowl. If you’re interested in an actual fire pit, it will cost quite a bit more. Make sure you read some reviews before you buy.

What To Consider When Buying A Retractable Awning
When the sun beats down on a sultry summer day, or the clouds decide to provide a brief shower, awnings offer the perfect shelter. Sometimes though, you might want to brighten your living space by letting in some vibrant, shining rays. Whichever the case, retractable awnings give you the ability to perform either function. So, what do you need to consider when buying a retractable awning?
The first thing you will want to consider, of course, is how you plan on using the retractable awning. If you own a restaurant and want to keep the glare out of your patrons’ eyes as the sun rises or sets, you might want an awning made of material that blocks most of the rays. This applies to the home as well. If you live in an area that receives a lot of direct sunlight, thick material will cut the cost of your air conditioning by up to 70% according to some studies. Because the awning is retractable, it can be drawn back on cooler days and your home will be heated by the sun.
What is the retractable awning expected to cover? If the answer is a deck, patio, and the applicable furniture, the awning will be in the extended position more often. The fabric is going to be exposed to the elements quite a bit, so sturdy, possibly waterproof material is preferable. If you can’t find a good waterproof material, treat it with a waterproofing agent. The frame of the awning needs to be strong because the wind and water will test its integrity. Airplane-grade aluminum is available, and this material is lightweight enough to lessen the strain on whatever it is attached to, yet strong enough to resist the weather.
Another consideration to make when buying a retractable awning is the location you are erecting it. An area such as a patio that will see a lot of pedestrian traffic needs to provide good overhead clearance. If the awning is too low when extended, people will run into it. That doesn’t make for a pleasurable visit to your home. Whatever structure to which you attach the awning needs to be able to bear its weight. If an awning tears away from the structure, both the building and the awning could experience damage.
Retractable awnings are a good investment for comfort and home improvement. Just think about what your awning will be used for and where it will be erected and you will have a good idea of the route to take. Use some common sense when buying a retractable awning and you should have little trouble.

Garden / Patio Awnings – Choosing The Right Ones
A change of scenery is necessary every now and then, and how much easier does it get than simply getting outside of the house? It’s hard to beat the simple pleasure of relaxing on the patio and sipping a drink with a friend or reading a good book. While you are enjoying the outdoors, a garden, or patio, awning keeps you protected from the weather. What then are your options?
One option from which to choose is the retractable awning. One of these will keep your skin safe from too much sun and keep you out of rain showers. It also provides protection to your deck, patio, and your lawn furniture. Retractable awnings afford you the ability to help control your home’s heat as well. On hot days where your house is bombarded by the scorching sun, extend the awning to provide valuable shade to the house. This significantly lowers your electric bill too. On cooler days, the awning can be retracted so that more sunlight reaches the house, furnishing free heat. A retractable awning can be extended or retracted depending on the situation.
Stand alone awnings offer similar protection to that of retractable awnings, but they can be placed wherever you need it. Because they don’t need to be attached to the house or other structure, you can cover up a vehicle, garden, or play area on any location you want. Though stand alone awnings lack the simple amenities of retractable awnings, they are not permanently attached to anything and can be relocated if needed. One other concern involved with stand alone awnings is that they do not receive the wind protection provided by a house or other building. Seek awnings with frames made from sturdy metals. It will be worth the extra cash.
There are plenty of options as far as the awning’s material too. Frames made of wood are incredibly stylish and give a natural, woodsy accent to the surrounding area. Wooden frames will need regular treatment because wood soaks up moisture and can splinter if not taken care of. Aluminum frames are popular because they are lightweight and easily attach to a variety of structures. Buy high grade aluminum due to the exposure to wind the awning will experience. If you are looking for a frame that will require the least maintenance, vinyl is the way to go. It is pricey and can be difficult to construct, but once the awning is up, you can put it out of your mind.
Garden/patio awnings provide many options to you. Whatever you want the awning to do, there is sure to be one that satisfies your wishes. Once your awning is up, you can enjoy your time outdoors without too much sun and rain.

Stamped Concrete Is An Exciting Old Material With A New Look
Stamped concrete is an old material, concrete with a great new look which makes it far more attractive for many uses today. Stamped concrete can simulate many other materials such as tiles, cobblestones, wood, and stone. It can be impressed with a variety of textures and is then usually colored to further add to the similarity of the material it emulates.
There are circumstances where clearly the most superior material is concrete in terms of strength and durability but is not preferred due to its appearance. A walkway made of concrete can be seamless, not subject to buckling or separation as cobblestones might be, but far less attractive than a stone walkway. Stamped concrete allows the homeowner to have the beautiful walkway they desire but also have the strength of concrete to make it last.
Concrete that is stamped is not a new discovery. However what has been used in the past has been distinctly lacking in visual appeal. Stamped surfaces were obviously stamped and very poor simulations of the materials they were modeled after. Recent advances in coloration and textures however have lifted stamp concrete into another realm and given it a greater aesthetic appeal.
Today concrete that has been textured and colored is still concrete with all its strengths but it also is much more pleasing to the eye. This material is beginning to be common not only in businesses but in upscale homes. While a stamped concrete walkway might look similar to another material such as natural stone or cobble stones it has few of the same weaknesses of this material which make frequent repairs necessary.
Stamping concrete is not usually a weekend do it yourself project for the homeowner. Stamping requires precise timing, multiple people and specialized equipment. Concrete pouring is a simple matter for most people but the stamping and impression process usually require professionals.
Concrete to be stamped is poured as usual but is laid at least four inches deep. Colors can be added to the concrete in the mixer or can be applied after. A release agent is applied to the surface of the concrete. The release agent will permit the stamping mats to be applied and then release them without taking the concrete up as well.
Once the concrete dries for about 24 hours the release agent must be washed off the surface. After the concrete dries a clear sealant is applied to preserve the color and texture of the stamping. This might seem like a very complicated process and it is, but when durability is a must but aesthetics are also desired there is no substitute or competition for this type of concrete.
While colored and textured decorative concrete can’t compete in terms of looks with the real thing such as cobblestones or flagstones it has undeniable advantages. This old material has a fresh and exciting new look thanks to some great advances in recent years. Sometimes improvements in old products are as exciting as brand new materials.
