The Retaining Wall In A Nutshell

Landscaping is such a vast and fascinating topic, and it can also be so general it could cover several tasks required in beautifying your home. The phrase may be used for something as simple as mowing the lawn or finishing your shrubs around the house or it may be used for something as complex as developing a design strategy for the design of the backyard. One such complex landscaping task is the retaining wall, and this should serve as a quick and painless guide to how it can be used.

You may have one or more reasons as to why you need a retaining wall. Two of the most popular reasons to make a retaining wall are for design reasons and because it is needed.

Retaining walls can make your home look unusual in a good way if you construct them properly. The gated front yard, for instance, is an ubiquitous part of many an American home. But wouldn’t it be neat if you had a retaining wall to surround the front yard, thus making you stand out among all the generic homes with gated front yards? If installed properly and at just the proper height, any home owner will pull off a sophisticated retaining wall and stand out from the crowd.

Many homeowners in America believe they cannot exist without a retaining wall to protect and secure their homes. Some homeowners may have land around their house that is a little bit unleveled. Sometimes, the land could be unleveled in a way that is too drastic for comfort. A good way to still be able to utilize this area is to build levels and secure these levels with a retaining wall. Each level may feature flowers or maybe even just grass. The retaining wall is necessary so that all the space can be used – no unleveled space would go to waste this way.

Ask yourself this – does your house really need a retaining wall? Well, more and more homeowners are looking into retaining walls as part of their landscaping design. Retaining walls, once again, are usually constructed by homeowners because of two things – to make their homes look unique in a neighborhood of gated front yards, and to make unleveled land usable. Examine the leveling of the land surrounding your home, and the house itself. The answer may be yes – you may need a retaining wall.

Fruit Trees | Planting & Caring For Them Properly

When you have decided on which kind of fruit tree you like, and where you would like to plant it, you can finally get started. If you purchase your tree from a nursery, be very careful when you are transporting it from the nursery to your house.

You may also need to make sure your ground is level where you plan to plant your tree. If you choose a quality spot, but the ground isn’t level or it’s lacking good soil, you may consider having a landscaping service come in to dump dirt or help sculpt an area to your needs.

Once you have gotten the tree safely back to your home, look at the bottom of it to see how large the ball of roots is. It may seem like a lot of work now, but you want to dig a hole that is twice as wide as the clump, and just a little less deep. Making the hole slightly bigger than the clump of roots allows there to be room for the soil that you dug out to be put back in. Otherwise you might be stuck with a large heap of unwanted dirt, and nowhere to put it. After you have the hole dug, place compost of fertilizer in it as a liner so that the tree will grow better. After this is finished you should set your fruit tree in the hole, and spread the roots evenly so the tree will be stronger and have more stability.

When all of this business is done, take the soil that you dug up and fill in the hole completely. Unless you want big piles of dirt everywhere, you should be sure you use all of the dirt even is it is a couple inches higher than the rest of your yard. This is because it will compress when watered. Before you firm up the soil, make sure that the tree is completely vertical and will not fall over. After you have confirmed that your tree is vertical you can gently firm up the soil.

If the tree’s trunk is not yet completely sturdy and can be bent, you need to tie the tree to a stake with a bit of rope. Don’t tie the rope too tightly to the tree, because you need to allow room for the trunk to grow.

Once the tree is strong enough to withstand various types of weather, you can remove the stakes. When this is finished you should lay mulch around the base of the tree. If you reside in an area where wildlife can access your yard, then you might want to put a fence around your tree, because the bark on young trees is appetizing to some animals. Once you have successfully planted your fruit tree it will start to bear fruit after it is three to five years old. Once your tree starts to carry a lot of fruit you should periodically pick some of the fruit so that the branches aren’t weighed down too much. If the fruit gets too thick, the branches can break off. On some years your tree might not bear as much fruit as others, but this should not worry you. Healthy trees often take years on vacation where they produce little or no fruit.

After you’ve planted your tree you might start to have some problems with pests. To help keep these pests away, always rake away old leaves, brush, or any other decaying matter that could be holding bugs that could be harmful to your tree.

To make sure that your trees always stay healthy in the future, make sure to prune it during Winter or Spring. Water your tree every two weeks during dry times, or utilize sprinkler systems in prime areas. Be sure not to hit your tree with a lawn mower or a weed eater because it could severely damage the growth process. Also just make sure that your tree gets plenty of water and plenty of sun, and your growing experience should be just great.

How to Install a Drip Irrigation System

If you are looking for a way to keep your garden watered without wasting your time and money, you have probably thougt about a lot of different options. Maybe youve considered a sprinkler, a hose, or a good old-fashioned watering can. These methods might be convenient, but most most times you end up wasting water on plants that do not need any more. If you live in a drought stricken area like I do, you know that every bit of water counts. I ended up getting a drip irrigation system. I have not regretted the decision at all.

When you install a drip irrigation system, your choices are from two varieties: above ground and under ground. The above ground version drips small amounts of water continuously onto the ground, and allows it to soak in. It is regulated from a pressure controller that ensures the water comes out a drip at a time instead of a stream or a spray. These pressure regulators are very inexpensive. The drip system can be set up with a pressure regulator and a garden hose that you have poked holes into – it would be ideal for you to get a pipe that is designed for this use, but I have found that using a garden hose works acceptably.

An underground drip system is a bit more difficult to install and maintain. But, if you are really into the aesthetic aspect of your garden and dont want any visible watering system, then you might consider it worth it. It is basically the same as the above ground version, but instead, a small trench has to dug for the hose or pipe before you do any planting. This allows the water direct access to the roots for the most watering efficiency. In addition, you will impress your neighbors by having a beautiful garden without going outside to water! Theyll be baffled.

When choosing between the two irrigation systems, you will need to take a few things into account. Do you have the same plant layout year round? If you are always changing it, then you probably wouldn’t want to bury your hose. It can be a pain to dig it up and re-align it with all your new plants every year or so. Even if your plant layout never changes, you need to consider how much you really mind seeing a hose in your garden. If it really bothers, then by all means bury it. Otherwise, I would suggest keeping it above ground for the convenience of repairing and rearranging.

One of the biggest advantages of the drip irrigation system is its efficiency. Instead of spraying a large amount of water like a garden hose does, it will make the most of your precious water by putting it exactly where it is needed. It can also provide your garden with constant watering, instead of just having to go thirsty whenever youre not around to water it.

So if youre looking for an easy, cheap, convenient, and efficient alternative watering method, you should go out to the gardening store today and purchase the necessary items to install a drip irrigation system. I think you will be surprised at how much easier it is to maintain a garden after you have one.

Top Landscaping Tips for the Winter | A Little TLC Now will Make for a Beautiful Lawn in the Spring

The Winter landscaping around a home, or a few feet from a home, helps to minimize the cold drafts and/or possible harsh winds of a winter storm. While this is a big plus for a homeowner, additional benefits of winter landscapes is the beauty of the colors. A lot of people build and design their homes landscape for Summer, Spring or Fall, but they usually forget about their Winter landscape. The landscape goes from spectacular to 3 or 4 months of basically nothing.

Trees

A berry tree has deep red or orange berries that help to feed the Winter birds and some other animals as well. But, the vast majority of berry trees produce only during the Winter, which is why they should be included on this list. Anything tree that is in the hawthorne family, like. holly trees, would be a berry tree. Yet another tree that stays vibrant during the Winter months from early to late autumn, is an apple tree.

Grasses

Ornamental grass is great for the Winter garden, and there are quite a few to choose from. These are several that will be good in the Winter: Little Kitten Maiden Grasses, Purple Silver Grasses, and Cabaret Japanese Silver Grasses.

Install a Water Feature

Water fountains must be de-activated in the winter so an in-ground water feature gives interest the entire year. Whether it is filled with water or maybe it is has a dry creek bed, a water feature will add interest to your landscaping garden in the winter and year round as well. Goldfish will hibernate through the winter if given a depth of three feet to sustain them during the freezing time. It is also a good time to think about a lawn irrigation system.

Build a Structure

Gazebos, Benches, Arbors, Pergolas, Statues, Birdbaths, and Bridges are good to add a visual interest to your Winter landscape. A rock garden or large rock and boulders are also a good choice for the landscape.

Evergreen Tree or Bush

Most often, the evergreen is thought of as a pine and spruce tree. These mighty trees typically survive harsh drought conditions and then the cold winter conditions, adding deep greens to the urban areas. Another evergreen though (largely forgotten) the ivy. An Ivy plant can be trained to grow wherever you want it to flourish. The ivy provides great ground cover and green touch to a winter landscape.

Plants

Up to the 1st harsh freeze of the Winter season, an oak leaf hydrangea will usually be vibrant as part of your Winter landscape. The plant is not blooming any longer during the winter season; however, the stalks of the oak leaf hydrangea start to look like that of the paper bark from a maple tree giving the winter landscape a different look.

Planting Vegetables

Yes planting vegetables during the early parts of the winter months is possible outside and inside. Apparently, the best time broccoli, cauliflower, and beetroot is right before the first frost/freeze. This will allow Mother Nature to do her thing in nurturing the seeds for a good crop in early spring.

A Fanciful Decorations Of Landscape Gardening

Landscape gardening represents the special decoration of the outdoor area around the house so as to meet certain style characteristics. The concept came into use during the 19th century when more and more people started cutting their gardens in very fashionable styles. People know landscaping under the name of English Gardens, because the English were the first to impose the trend. Most home owners will try do-it-yourself options, while others will hire professional designers to create some fanciful decoration.

Landscape gardening is carried out by cutting the lawn and the hedges in a peculiar way depending on your taste. Then, the flower arrangements, the presence of fountains with water statues or rocks, small bridges and special lighting systems contribute to the artistic effect specific to landscape gardening. There are companies that prefer to change the landscape of the surrounding outdoor area by hiring professional designers to preserve the same colors all year round. The trees, bushes and flowers play a major  part in landscape gardening. They are the elements on which you rely to achieve the most daring of effects. Thus, when you cultivate the flower beds you can choose complementing colors or you can make patterns by careful plant arrangement.

Landscape gardening is not possible with plenty of work, time and effort. Sand, gravel, river rocks and even carved wood find their place in landscape gardening too, but every artistic detail has to be exploited at the maximum. If you use a backhoe in your line of landscaping, you are probably going to need more than one tractor backhoe attachment. Fortunately there are several different attachments available in the market, such as case backhoe bucket. With this bucket, you can complete more landscape gardening jobs in a short period of time.

Your garden will look different at day and at night. And the outdoor lighting system contributes to the modifications and the look of the garden immensely. At night, the trees, bushes and plants only offer you shadows that you can play with and make more or less appealing with the careful location of light fixtures in the most unexpected of places. For instance, small lights along the alley will be enough to help you find the way, while leaving the mystery of the garden unspoiled.

Last but not least, the presence of a porch or a gazebo is very important for landscape gardening, together with the choice of the specific furniture. It is important to adapt all these elements to the features of the house, the size of the garden and the overall decor. The main purpose of landscape gardening should not be that of showing off but rather of creating an atmosphere that you love. Personal satisfaction and comfort definitely come first here!
