Garden hoses can be extremely troublesome – tidy storage is very difficult. The Hozelock Auto Reel range of automatic hose reels is designed to help.

Whether hung on the tap or left in a tangled heap on the ground, it’s a problem. Kinks form in the hose when you unravel it, so the water won’t flow. Putting it away afterwards is just as bad if you haven’t got a decent storage solution. And the problem is even worse in cold weather when the hosepipe is hard.

The hose is stored on a spring-loaded reel inside a durable polypropylene casing. You just pull the hose out to the desired length and the mechanism locks, preventing the hose from rewinding. More can be pulled out at any time by unlocking the mechanism.

To replace the hose on the reel, simply disengage the ratchet and the hose withdraws into the unit at a controllable speed, without kinking and tangling. The patented mechanism that allows this is what the Hozelock Auto Reel is known for.

The reel unit is fixed to a wall, so is well out of the way. Two metres of feeder hose is supplied, but you can extend this if you want to fix the unit further away from the tap. It pivots to lie flat against the wall when not in use.

It’s fitted with a child lock – many users have said how irresistible it is to children – and can also be padlocked to the wall to prevent theft.

Each Auto Reel comes with an adjustable spray nozzle, connectors and all the fixings you need to attach it to the masonry. A cautionary note – the larger unis can be heavy, particularly when full of water, so must be very securely attached to the wall. If your wall is not completely solid, it might be a good idea to use masonry bolts.
