More Facts About Exotic Lumber
When we speak of exotic lumber, it simply means exotic wood which you can find around the world. What is considered to be exotic in the US may not be how the rest of the world sees it. An example would be Mahogany which, in its native central America and Northern South American regions, is not considered as exotic. This is because it’s a material that is readily available in these markets.
So don’t let the term “exotic” fool you into believing the wood is in short supply, but only that it’s not local to your area. Philippine Mahogany isn’t really considered “exotic” in that part of the world either. True, it’s still expensive, but availability is what really makes a wood exotic.
But there are species that should be considered as exotic or even endangered, and the American Chestnut is one of them. There were American Chestnut Trees that grew upwards 100 feet and had diameters of 10 feet and there was a very large supply of them found in the Appalachian mountains. At one time, it’s thought that as many as 1 out of every 4 trees throughout the Appalachian forested areas were the American Chestnut trees. A lethal plague called chestnut blight which is a fungal disease that destroys the bark of the chestnut is the reason why they were destroyed. Some hard Rock Maples and even Oak lumber could be considered “exotic” depending on the current supply and availability.
You need to check where the area of origin was and how it was obtained if you are going to search for exotic lumber. Removed from endangered rain forest areas around the world are many exotic woods. These are NOT the materials anyone would necessarily want if they cared about the environment. Removed from the managed tree areas or specifically grown for the world market are many alternatives that are considered as exotic timber and this is an important fact to remember. A good example of hardwood is teak and this fine material is now being grown in many places as a crop to serve the market interest although it originated in the rain forests. By selecting a farm raised product, you will be helping to maintain the rain forests while also providing a living to local peoples and still getting an extremely beautiful material that lasts a very long time.
Beautiful materials like Birdseye maples, indigenous oak, Brazilian Cherry, Walnut, and Rosewood can be used in order to create high quality furniture that will last for several lifetimes.
It’s possible to consider the environment and obtain some of the finest exotic lumber materials in the world as long as you take some care.
