Every good arrangement has a focal point, or a strong center of interest. This is generally a flower of a contrasting color, a large bloom, and definitely toward the bottom of your arrangement. All light-colored flowers should be towards the top of the arrangement and then work down to the darkest hue.

Taking a piece of the cinnamon fern, which was not anesthetized, we placed it in the background. It is not once and a half times the height of our container. Next we used the red orchid iris, an almost maroon iris, suggesting heavy material, and which properly should be placed near the bottom of your arrangement.

We have also used an even number of blooms. Using an odd number is more interesting and no two flowers should appear at equal heights nor parallel to each other.

At the bottom of the arrangement we brought in the pale yellow of the tulip, bringing definite color near the top of the arrangement. The top edge of the container has been left barren.

By using three of the yellow tulips of uneven height, placing two or three pieces of the fern behind it and moving it towards the left of the container, and then bringing the dark red of one of the iris to permit the petals to overhang the container, a perfect arrangement could have been achieved.

Never use too great a number of different kinds of flowers in one arrangement. It is better to use just the one kind and use various stages of development – that is full bloom, partially open, buds or pods, working with the full bloom as the focal point or the lower flower.

Permit an arrangement to “grow” from one point without crossing the lines of your flowers. Containers

A word about containers. Each should be large enough to hold all the flowers without crowding, as this shortens the life of the bloom. A container without ornamentation is preferable. The ornamental kind usually detracts from the arrangement proper.

It should be of harmonizing or contrasting color, and may be of any texture. Pottery containers are the most popular because they may be used with a greater variety of flowers.

For best results fill the containers with acid based compost or peat.

An ample supply of blueberries for the average family to enjoy is from four to six bushes. The berries should be ready for picking in mid and late summer and each bush will produce for several weeks. Blueberries are not categorized as a complete self-fertile plant; in order to have a good yield of berries 2 or more blueberry varieties needs to be planted. Normally for the first three years of the bushes live they will not produce any fruit at all.

Blueberry bushes can be planted in fall or spring when the soil is workable. Wild blueberries should be planted 3 to 4 feet apart and an inch deeper than their original nursery container. Fertilize your wild blueberries at least a month before the beginning of any growth. Ammonium sulfate is a very good source of nitrogen and if you apply it alone do not use any more than 1 ounce per square yard of bushes. If the soil is sandy this should be repeated again after they start to grow.  A 10-10-10 fertilizer can take the place of straight ammonium sulfate. Mulch the orchard with garden compost, leaf mold, or peat in the early days of summer. You also want to protect your blueberry plants from the birds by placing netting over the top of the bushes. The birds like the blueberries just as much as you do so you may want to plant a few extra bushes. These are just a few blueberry plant care ideas to ensure a healthy orchard.

If you have too much lime in the soil your bushes will develop yellow patches on their leaves, the plants growth will be very poor and your supply of fruit will be very low. If this is the case you want to decrease the pH levels to be between 5 and 6 by adding acidic material such as peat moss and also add sulfur to the soil.

Pruning is not necessary for the first three years of the plants life. After that length of time you can start pruning every winter. The new fruit for next season will appear on the last years wood but to encourage the plant to produce new wood you must cut at least four of the oldest shoots from every blueberry bush.  

Blueberries are very low in calories and high in antioxidants. Antioxidants, which destroy free radicals, help to lower precancerous colon lesions and lower the risk of cancer of the ovaries. Blueberries also contain other antioxidants such as anthocyanin, Vitamins C, E, A, and B complex, copper, selenium, iron, and zinc. These enhance the immune system and help to prevent infections. Once your immune system has become strong the better chance you have of combating colds, fevers, pox, and viral diseases. They also fight against osteoporosis that occurs in women after menopause.
