Beekeeping Guide To The Life Cycle Of Honey Bees
The honey bees are separated to three beings: female worker, queen and drone. The following cycle will show the differences between them well.
The development cycle is different in queen, males, and the females. In 24 days for the males come out, it takes about 21 days for the workers and only 16 days for the queen. There is as a rule only one queen per hive. The feeding of royal jelly by female bees makes a chosen female bee to develop into a new virgin queen.
A new queen bee is created by the females when she dies, or the colony grows bigger or when she becomes old. Immediately after the new virgin emerges she takes a romantic flight to mate as soon as possible and begins to lay eggs.
The life span of a queen is usually about 2-3 years; the males die after the first mating if not are usually chased from the hive by the females, and the females live a few months and in winter longer.
Day 1 the queen takes tour of the hives to see whether built is for male or female. After that she begins her vertical egg laying process.
The egg may or may not touch the wall of the cell (this makes it hard for beginning beekeepers to spot cells filled with eggs; try using a magnifying glass to spot the eggs. Bee eggs look like tiny grains of rice).
Day 2 the eggs start to lean or edge towards the walls about 45 degrees.
3rd day – Eventually, the egg reaches the cell floor and is completely vertical. At this phase, the egg finally hatches. The larva emerges. The cell at this point in time is still open.
4th day to 8th day – Female workers diligently feed the newly hatched larvae with brood food. The larvae expand and grow at a phenomenal speed; molting occurs at 24-hour intervals.
The entire cell capacity can be overwhelmed by the larvae growth. This triggers the cell sealing activity of the workers, They begin to close the seal by wax t0 indicate the next phase has began in the life of a larva.
Day 8 -21 begins the larvae waste. The head comes out to prepare for the cocoon stage.
The larva spins a cocoon around itself. This usually happens after the fifth molting. During this time, the ivory white larva also begins to change color. At 21 days, the pupa molts for the last time before breaking out of the sealed cell.

How Will I Know A Termite Mound If I See One?
Termite mounds are different from species to species although to the amateur student of termites, many of them seem alike. However, an expert can often deduce the species just by looking at the mound. Termites build their nests in all kinds of locations. Some build theirs in living trees like bees, others build them in dead upright or fallen trees. Tree stumps are a favourite of some other varieties of termite, which is why it is always recommended that you remove tree stumps in termite areas.
Then there are yet another kind of termite – those that like to live in or near the ground. Those that live in the ground are called subterranean termites. As they mine their tunnels and hollow out the chambers for their nests, they consume a lot of the material and compact a lot more, but what they find excessive, they carry to the surface. This often forms part of the nest, but not a very important part of it. This makes a termite mound of sorts, but they are not the impressive ones that you see in films.
Those termite mounds, also incorrectly called ant hills in Africa and Australia, are made by termites that live above ground, although most species will also have tunnels and chambers underground as well. These are the large structures that termites are famous for.
They are largely built by termites living in the dry savannas and dry wastelands of Australia and Africa. The biggest known to man is about nine metres (thirty feet) tall, although the average is nearer to a little over a metre (three or four feet) tall.
Nevertheless, these termite mounds are not only impressive for their height. They are also remarkably robust. Elephants occasionally use them as scratching posts. Imagine that! Two tons of elephant rubbing itself up and down on your earthen hut or even a wooden house. But the really fascinating stuff goes on inside.
The eggs and the nymphs (young) of some species can only continue to exist within a tolerance of plus or minus one degree centigrade. The Compass Termite manages this by building a wedge shaped mound with the longest sides facing north-south. This allows the prevailing drafts to be sucked in by the column of warm air rising from the base of the nest up to and out of the top of the mound.
The termite mounds of some species are so beautiful and weird that they attract tourists, who invariably gaze in wonderment at the design and intricacy of the mound. Scientists too have been investigating termite mounds for a long time and recently Australian engineers have joined in.
They are hoping that they will be able to understand termite technology in order to construct large buildings so that they are more self-regulating. They are actually constructing a man-made termite mound to try out their theories in the anticipation that they will be able to incorporate them into future designs.
Therefore, in a few years time, if someone asks you what a termite mound looks like, you may simply be able to point at the civic offices and say: like that.
Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many subjects, but is currently concerned with Termidor termite treatment – a termite killer. If you are interested in this or if you are wondering: What Does A Termite Look Like?. Please go to our web site now for further details.
Do You Know The Best Way To Top A Pizza?
So many of us enjoy making and dining on delicious pizzas but most of us probably don’t think of the important process involved with making and preparing the absolute perfect pizzas including their toppings and crusts.
What to Use When Topping Pizzas
When it comes to choosing the various toppings you should use for your pizzas you will definitely want to use your imagination and creativity, as the choices are just about limitless. Make your pizzas with as few or as many toppings as you like ranging from the simplest to the most elaborate of ingredients.
Maybe you love the traditional types of pizzas made with red tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and one or two toppings like mushrooms or pepperoni. Alternatively, maybe you are more adventurous and would like to try pizzas made with chanterelle mushrooms and prosciutto or roasted walnuts. Whatever toppings you choose you can be sure the process will be an enjoyable one especially while discovering the flavorful cuisine and traditions of different cultures.
Making Your Pizza Toppings Even Better
After you have selected the toppings of your choice, you will have to prepare and then assemble them atop of the pizzas. Remember that fresh, uncooked vegetables contain quite a bit of water and using them in their raw form will likely result in soggy crusts. Precooking vegetables such as tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers, onions, and olives will reduce their moisture content and help to prevent wet, soggy pizzas.
Certain meats including the popular pepperoni and sausage can also cause soggy pizzas, as they are rather greasy. Fortunately, you can also cook these meats before adding them to your pizzas and baking in the oven. Also, blot greasy meats with a few paper towels before using them for toppings.
Did you know that using pizza toppings in varying orders when assembling the dish can have a great effect on its taste? The very same ingredients layered in a different order can cause pizzas to have a different taste or even cook unevenly.
For instance, if the cheese is put on pizzas first and before other items such as the seasonings or toppings, the cheese will probably not brown as it should and the fresh seasonings like basil will burn and dry out. Nevertheless, if the basil were placed on top of the sauce then covered by the cheese it would be protected from the bulk of the heat and the cheese would be able to brown as it should.
As a general rule, you will want to put the sauce on your pizzas first, and then almost all of the cheese, the meats, vegetables, or whatever type of toppings you choose, and finally a bit more grated cheese added to the top just before the pies are done baking. Also, be sure to spread the sauce evenly around your pizzas taking it almost to the edge of the uncooked dough to avoid having a dry crust.
Broccoli is a great vegetable. You can cook it on its own with butter and seasonings, you can add it to salad, you can eat it raw with dip. It is very versatile. It is also one of the most nutritious foods you can eat. Broccoli is related to cabbage, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower.
Our Time In Australia Consisted Of A Brief Fear But Our Home Offered Protection
Gazing out of my window I can see the first omens of the leaves colouring on the trees. We had our first precursor of autumn a two weeks ago when a massive house spider scuttled across the living room carpet. Following that we have seen another three and another is hiding near the stairs somewhere. I’m not the best with spiders, and I wish I could bbq the lot of them. It was one of my fears when we moved to Canberra as the red back frequently lives under toilet seats and is known to nip at things that dangle too adjacent. The fact they can be deadly toxic just increases the sorrow. But for some reason they never live above the 2nd floor in a building and we got an apartment on the third in ours.
We lived in an apartment block called Capital Tower, one of the 2 highest buildings in the ACT. The other one, Rydges Hotel was next door and was handy for a swift drink on the way home on a warm day. The main bar had pictures of all Australian prime ministers including the greatest, Harold Holt who went swimming in a cove near Melbourne on December 17th 1967 and vanished.
Our apartment building contained a gym which had a sauna and hot tub for relaxing after a work out which I used several times a week. Ironic, bearing in mind it was free for us to use and I had paid a fortune for a membership in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, and yet I only rarely went. Outside it also had a garden which contained a swimming pool and a massive gas bbq that you could use as long as it was booked and left clean. There was also a smaller charcoal bbq which largely redundant as you had to provide your own briquettes and have it cleaned and cleared of ash and rubbish. The grounds also had a couple of tennis courts as well which were usually in use once autumn was done.
Leaving the complex, you could turn right along a path to walk into the central business district, known as the Civic, or turn left which took you across a bridge to the side of lake Burley Griffin, called after the man who was the architect for Canberra when Australians decided to create a city to be a home to the federal government. There was a little beach, though swimming wasn’t a good idea, but also a place where you could hirerent rowing boats and pedalos and also a picnic space which had a public bbq space with anybody could use if there was an unused charcoal bbq as long as they had their own briquettes. If they hadn’t got charcoals, you could use a gas bbq which were worked by putting in a coin which would deliver a metered measurement of gas. These were all over the place in Australia which is of course keen on the bbq as a cultural icon and not everyone wants to cart a portable bbq with them when they go out for the day. They just want to carry the grub and grog they will need to get them through the day.
We should have them in the United Kingdom at parks, beaches or other places where groups of people go to spend a day outdoors.

A Guide To Reduce Your Energy Costs
In our day to day life we consume a lot of energy through different appliances. However, if you want to reduce the energy consumption to some extent then follow the below mentioned steps.
If there are any leaks or cracks on the ceiling then use caulking, weather stripping or insulation to block them. This way you can save up to 20 percent in your energy bills. Keeping your air conditioner clean can be a huge energy saver. You not only need to check the filters once a month, but also check the outside of the unit for dust or dirt. Keeping this outer part clean can help your air conditioner run more efficiently.
One other simple way to reduce your electricity bills is to clean the condenser coils of your refrigerator. You can find the condenser coils (squiggly shaped metal tubing) on the back of your refrigerator. When these coils are dirty, the refrigerator consumes more electricity.
Appliances such as VCR, microwave, DVD player, coffee maker and appliances that have a clock or timer keep on draining power even after you stop using them. To save this energy, you should unplug such appliances after using them.
By keeping your water heater warm can save a lot because it also keeps the water in it warm for a long time. An insulation blanket costs only about $10 and it will quickly pays for itself.
No doubt it is a good practice to shut down your computer at the end of the day for conserving energy. But along with this you also need to shut off other appliances such as monitors, printers and speakers etc to save some amount of energy.
You can also plan about the proper placement of your ceiling fans in order to reduce the cooling and heating cost. For instance, a stairwell is a place where you can place your ceiling fan and it will push hot air down in winter and pull cool air up in summer. As a result your AC will not need to work hard and it will save you some money.
Keep in mind that all clothes do not take same time for drying. For instance, a cotton shirt will take less time to dry than a pair of jeans. So it’s a good idea to wash all cottons together and all jeans together. Most of the new refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines and cloth dryers have energy saver settings. By simply having them, you can save up to $400/year.

Window Shutters For Security And Lighting Options
When you want to add style to your house, one way of doing this and adding security at the same time, is by having window shutters fixed to the exterior of your house. Exterior window shutters add a traditional, Mediterranean look to a property. These days, most houses have glass windows, but before that, people used shutters to regulate the light levels, prevent insects and the cold from entering and for protection.
Exterior window shutters are available in many different shapes and made from various materials, although the most common ones are wooden and oblong. The quality of the materials used will determine how long your shutters will last, because, as with all exterior goods, they will be exposed to all types of extreme weather conditions.
Plastic, vinyl, metal and wooden shutters are available at many home improvement centres. Although they look good, shutters also have practical uses. They can prevent glaring noon sunlight from over heating your home as well as offering protection.
Cedar wood is a good choice, as are most other hard woods. Hardwoods are more resistant to rain and sunlight and, so long as they are painted, varnished or oiled regularly – at least once a year – then your shutters will give you ten or more years of good service.
Most varieties of hardwood are very resistant to attack from insects too. This is because a lot of them contain oils that are repugnant or even toxic to insects. However, if you are unsure about the quality of the timber that your shutters are made from, you can paint them.
Painting, staining or oiling is far simpler if you carry it out before you hang the shutters. If you want to use oil to take care of your new wooden shutters, first stain them to the colour that you want them to be with a stain without varnish. When you have accomplished the desired shade and it has dried, pour oil linseed oil onto a cloth and rub it into the wood in circular motions. The more coats you give it the better, but it may not take more that two or three coats.
If you want to varnish your shutters, either stain them to the colour you require as above and then seal them with clear yacht varnish or use a stained yacht varnish without the stain. Whichever way you go, thin the first coat of varnish down until it is almost watery. Paint it on and leave to dry. Rub it down with medium coarse sandpaper and then coat it again with neat varnish. Wait for it to dry and sand it down again, but with fine sandpaper. Add at least one more coat, but it is a matter of the more the better.
If you decide to paint them, apply a primer or some thinned down undercoat. Wait for it to dry and sand it lightly with fine sandpaper. Next, put on a coat of undercoat that is suitable for the finishing colour. For example, grey is good for black, brown and even green or red. Sand it down when it is dry with fine paper. Finally, gloss your shutters with the final colour.
In conclusion, hang the shutters on apposite hinges using brass screws. Next time, you paint or varnish your shutters paint over the screw heads, although brass never looks out of place anyway.

How Photovoltaic Cells Can Be Used For Producing Electricity ?
Photovoltaic cells are considered to be very efficient and are not very expensive to afford. As the size of the cells decreases its efficiency increases. So you do not need to pay much for producing these cells. Now the cost of producing solar energy has reduced and become $4.00 per watt.
Production of electricity through solar power is very beneficial for the environment in which we live as it does not emit any harmful gas in the atmosphere. Also it utilizes the freely available sunlight.
Solar collection cells are not very popular but they are continuously becoming popular among homeowners and also for commercial use. You can place these cells on your roof top and can utilize it for heating the house, producing hot water or generating electricity. For producing hot water through photovoltaic cells, water is encased in between the cells and heated. After that it is supplied through various pipes.
One another solar power system available for use is called the PV System. This PV System is connected to the nearest electrical grid. Whenever excess of solar energy is collected at a particular home, it is transferred to the grid for shared use. As a result it lowers the grid’s dependence on the hydroelectrically-driven electricity production.
If you connect to a PV System, cost of producing energy can be reduced. It will not only reduce the pollution in the environment but will also reduce the pressure on the grid system. In some of the areas, centralized solar collection arrays are designed for small towns or suburban communities.
Some big-name corporations have made it clear that they are also getting into the act of using solar power. It further indicates that solar generated energy is becoming an economically practical alternative energy source.
In nations like Japan, Germany, United States and Switzerland, usage of solar energy is promoted by offering government subsidies or tax breaks to companies and individuals who plan to use solar power.
As technology is advancing and more sources are becoming available for collecting solar energy, more and more private investors are becoming interested in investing in this green technology and implementing it further.

How To Protect Your Flowers From Diseases
Flowers can fall prey to a disease and you should be prepared to take care of them should this happen. Attacking flowers are things like bacteria, fungi, and viruses.
For quite a long time, fungi has lived dormant in the soil even without plants. Even if you grow your flowers in an area that’s been bare for a long time, fungi can still be there, waiting for you to plant something that it can attack. So don’t think starting with bare soil will protect your flowers.
Fungi are difficult to kill since they reproduce through spores which can quickly spread. Fungus can spread up to 100 million spores in a single plant infected. Through the roots and leaves are how fungi can enter a plant. You need to work hard to get rid of a fungal infection completely so it won’t return.
Bacteria can’t live in bare soil for very long. Without moisture and warmth, they can’t grow and multiply. When it comes to bacterial infections, they’re more prevalent in warm weather and wet areas. Bacteria is often spread through things like overhead watering that causes water to splash up onto plants. Watch for damage to your plants since bacteria can get into cut stem or leaf.
In the soil, viruses can’t multiply. They can only reproduce inside a plant’s cells. Insects usually transmit them or seeds and pollen are infected and can be spread to other plants. Viruses usually enter plants through cuts in the stems or leaves.
The most important thing to do to take care of your sick flowers is to properly diagnose the problem. To identify any problems, books or online resources can be used. To identify any problems, you need resources available because if you don’t know what’s wrong with your flowers, then you won’t be able to treat them.
You can also ask advice from your local garden center or extension service. If you’re not able to identify the problem, you can seek help from one of these places. Take pictures and describe your problem. Sometimes pictures can help much more than a description.
Treating your flowers with organic methods first is a good idea. Your plants can be damaged by chemicals and they’re also bad for the environment. Don’t automatically go for those fungicides and chemicals, because you can often treat your problems organically.
There are flower that are more delicate than others. For example, roses are highly susceptible to different problems. Such problems include blistered leaves, flowers that won’t open due to bugs called thrips, and black spots. To prepare to take care of any problems, make sure you know the kind of problems your flowers are susceptible to.

Is Gas Or Electricity Better For A Stove ?
As technology is enhancing regularly so is requirement of your kitchen appliances. Homeowners still gets confused in between old and new appliances as well as gas ranges and electric ranges. They could not decide that which one is better for them because both are advantageous as well as disadvantageous.
First of all we will talk about gas range. No doubt it is costly but the burner of the stove can be adjusted according to your need. You can use your gas stove even when there is no power supply.
One other big advantage of this heater is that it can easily indicate you about anything wrong that is about to happen. If you get any fault smell of gas, out of control flames or no flame at all then there are chances of any fault in your gas stove. Using this stove, you can easily cook food. However, there could be problem of pilot light sometimes but that can also be overcome by lighting it through a match stick.
An electric range is very different. Electricity costs money but not as much as gas. Here you can adjust the temperature pretty easily. The very accurate temperature control is a big advantage here.
It does not take much time for cooking and due to this it keeps the nutrients in and saves us time. Many coil style burners will turn bright red to warn us of the intense heat. Unfortunately, if the power goes out, you can’t use the stove.
It might be possible that the warmth of a oven is not as intense as the flame of a gas range but it does not say that what is good and what is bad. Electric stoves having flat surface can be easily cleaned and it is very less likely to catch fire.
After knowing all the facts, you can easily decide that you want to go with which of the options. Keep in mind that a gas stove is easier to clean and maintain. Also maintaining a gas stove is not very expensive. You can control the temperature in a better way here and it leads you to have better food.
On contrary, electric ranges are more convenient and environment friendly. For your convenience both the choice are open to you and you can go with one that you feel more beneficial.

Bright New Ideas For Functional Indoor Lighting
Lights. Often an afterthought in many decorating schemes. Most don’t think how they can be used to set off a collection of Hummel figurines. Fewer still consider them an over looked decorating element as important as the color of paint that can be used set a room’s mood. Let’s see if can’t start to change that.
Most of the time when we reach for the light switch it turns on a ceiling lamp. Sure that baths the room in light but does little else to create ambiance or mood. Yet there are multiple ways to light up a room. That include everything from track, to recessed to under cabinet lighting. Which you use when depends on what you’re trying to achieve.
You see, basically light fixtures offer three benefits. They can provide enough light so you can do things like read, balance your checkbook or prepare dinner. This is task lighting. General lighting is used to illuminate a room. While accent lighting plays off the ability of light to bring to life specific objects in your room. And there are various ways to pull that off.
Track lighting is quite good for task lighting. It’s directional. It’s easy to install. And you can get more light by simply installing more fixtures. This type of lighting lets you concentrate the light where you want it. Making this a useful option for kitchens, reading areas or anywhere else you need light so you can see what you’re doing.
Recessed lights placed in the ceiling let you shed light on parts of a room otherwise in the dark. So called “can” lights can shine a decent amount of glare free light. They’re also discreet making them a good choice if you want attention to be on the object lit up rather than the light itself.
Those looking to brighten kitchen counter tops often turn to under cabinet lighting. These are often out of sight too, and give you the ability to both incorporate an element of light in your interior design scheme and functionality.
Finally decorative style pendants add a bit of pizazz or elegance to a room. Pendant lighting is particularly good when hung over work surfaces. Like a game table, kitchen island or work bench. The light they generate is projected downward and bathes the work are in illumination. To avoid glare consider using frosted bulbs if the bulb is exposed.
Of course no home lighting project is complete without the installation of dimmer switches. They let you easily control the amount of light streaming out and thus control the ambiance. Plus they’re a good way to extend any light bulb’s life while saving energy at the same time.
Anyway these are but four ways to transform a room from underlit, gloomy and downright depressing to bright and cheery. While your lighting needs will vary, each type of lighting described here affects the mood in different ways.
