A Few Pros And Cons Of Growing Your Own Fruits And Vegetables

It seems that planting a home garden has become quite popular in the last few years. If this is something you might find in your future, there are as few things that you should be aware of when starting out in gardening. It looks easy when you see someone else doing it, but all that produce did not grow all by itself. There was a lot of work involved on the part of the gardener.

If you have ever observed a gardener out in their field, appearing to wrestle with a mean-looking machine, you may have been introduced to the rotor tiller. It will attempt to drag you around the garden area, giving you a great deal of backaches and even neck pain if you don’t keep control. It may be a good idea to go back and get some instruction from that gardener that you saw being hauled behind his tiller.

Let us assume that you have now tilled up the soil and are ready to prepare it for your seeds or plants. Many seeds are started early, such as peas, which prefer cool weather to grow properly. Potato ‘sets’ are not seeds, but are parts of a potato, each having an ‘eye’ or growing section in it. These also are examples of early plantings. Preparing the ground is simply clearing it of large clods of dirt, or braking them up, and removing rocks if they are in evidence.

One of the best ways to assure a good harvest is to plant at least twice as many seeds as you actually want to succeed. Also be sure those little seeds are put to bed at the right depth and spacing from each other, thinning as needed later on.

Some folks have skipped this tilling and preparing of the ground by purchasing a special growing bag which holds soil, and perhaps tomato or strawberry plants, hanging it upside down from a post or other sturdy support beam. This eliminates some of the back-breaking work of gardening chores. Simply water this container from the top and watch it produce.

To be sure the soil in your growing patch remains loose and pliable, ensuring good root penetration, avoid walking on it. One method of doing this is to build a planting area approximately eight feet square. This makes it possible to reach all parts without entering it and packing down the growing medium.

The female half of a couple is often the one planting and caring for the food growing spot. It would be so kind of her partner to reward her hard work with a little something special, such as a fanciful scarf, favorite book or even a crystal necklace to adorn her neck. After all, if mama is happy, everyone is happy.
