What shower tray should you choose for your new bathroom?

You have a great opportunity to design a new bathroom and you need to decide on a shower tray. It must be efficiant , whilst looking the part. It must have a designer feel, give you a good showering space, without taking over the bathroom entirely. you need to decide on your shape? Here’s our handy little guide:

Categories to take into consideration

  • sizing
  • figure
  • What height

Size

Even now there are more and more options coming to market, there is a huge choice. There are standard sizes due to demands, usually 3 sizes dominate the specifications of most modern bathrooms. 900mm Quadrant is the most popular choice, followed by 800mm square and 760mm square.

Alot of shower trays are replaced becuase they are an old fashioned design.. Those looking to buy a new tray when designing a new bathroom from scratch are in a fortunate position.

Shape

Think about how high the shower enclosure is also, remember most are often nearly 2000mm. When thinking of the size of your shower tray remember that a large (often 1900mm high) shower enclosure will be stood on top of it!! So although a 900 quadrant shower space does not look a lot when chalking a plan out on a floor, it certainly is when the enclosure is installed!

Its due to futuristic and sharp. This is because of more modern square shower enclosures Go for a square shape to give a more minimalistic feel to the room, especially when mated with a thick glass shower enclosure. Square trays do give a more sleek and slightly colder feel to a room especially when mated with a high quality 10mm or 800 shower enclosure.

Height

You need to consider the height of the tray. A hazard is created sometimes by a high tray height, the elderly for example can trip. A high tray is harder for the elderly and young to get into, even creating a trip hazard! They also look less minimal, and are quite unsightly.

Modern 40mm to 800mm trays can nearly disappear to the same height as your floor, you can achieve this look by laying the tray onto plywood directly onto your floor boards, then tiling up to the side of the shower tray.

Materials

Really the manufacturers all product to the same standards now. The main point is that the shower tray drains water. As long at the trays have a good quality acrylic skin and are not warped or pitted and drain water, then they all do the same job. The base starts to dry and is like concrete. The resin sets and the base almost looks like concrete. Foam is also used , it is applied to the back of the acrylic skin and then cools and dries hard. There are also “foam”, again the skin is formed into a shape then foam is poured on the back and it sets. Trays will last for many years, as long as the bottom of the tray is stable.

We hope this little guide has given you an insight into what’s best for you, happy shopping!
